About Sydney

Sydney is a beautiful city situated on one of the largest natural and most spectacular harbours in the world.

It is a vibrant city, renowned for its scenic beauty and cosmopolitan lifestyle. Sydney offers delegates the chance to experience the high life at a slow pace. From fine dining on the Harbour’s edge, bush walks that uncover secluded bays and breathtaking views, sailing around the Harbour, weekend markets in the Historic Rocks precinct or visiting one of Sydney’s 70 golden beaches, Sydney has something for everyone.

The stunning Sydney Opera House provides the perfect backdrop for photos on Sydney’s Harbour and is classified as one of the cultural hubs of Sydney, offering an extensive selection of dance, theatre, drama, opera and concerts to delegates.

Delegates will also have the opportunity to view one of Australia’s most photographed attractions, the Sydney Harbour Bridge. As the world’s largest steel arch bridge, the bridge is one of Sydney’s iconic landmarks allowing delegates to experience the world’s finest harbour and views of the city.



 
Congress Venue

The Congress will be held at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre, a world class facility situated at Darling Harbour.

Darling Harbour is Sydney’s entertainment precinct. Located on the waterfront, within walking distance of the heart of the city, it offers visitors a variety of great restaurants, excellent shopping, live entertainment, beautiful gardens and fantastic attractions.

A wide range of hotels and serviced apartments are available all within walking distance of the venue. Visitors can hop on the light rail or monorail, take a cab, jump a ferry or water taxi or simply stroll to Darling Harbour or the city.

General Information

Banks

Banks are open from 0930 to 1600 Monday to Thursday and 0930 to 1730 on Friday. Select banks are open on Saturday; however, all banks are closed on Sunday. Automatic Teller Machines (ATM) facilities are located at a variety of outlets throughout the area. The closest ATM to the Convention Centre is located in the Harbourside Shopping Centre. The closest banks are located in Haymarket, a short walk from the Convention Centre.


 
Child Care

Please note that no official arrangements have been made for child care during the Congress. Please check with the hotel you are staying at who may be able to assist you further with babysitting services during your stay.


 
Climate

April is part of Sydney’s autumn season and temperatures on average will range between 14C (58F) and 22C (72F).


 
Dress Code

The dress code throughout the Congress will be smart casual. For the Congress Welcome Reception "Business or Lounge Attire" is recommended. Cocktail attire is recommended for the Congress Dinner.


 
Insurance

Registration fees do not include insurance of any kind. It is strongly recommended that all delegates take out their own travel and medical insurance prior to coming to the Congress. The policy should include loss of fees/deposit through cancellation of your participation in the Congress, or through cancellation of the Congress itself, loss of airfares for any reason, medical expenses, loss or damage to personal property, additional expenses and repatriation should travel arrangements have to be altered. Neither the Congress Secretariat nor the Organising Committee will take any responsibility for any participant failing to insure. Please speak to your travel agent or airline in regard to this matter.


 
Local Time

Local time in Sydney during April is Greenwich Mean Time plus 10 hours.


 
Meals

All tea breaks and lunches will be served amongst the Congress exhibition. The Congress Organisers recognise that some delegates may have special dietary needs. Please advise the Congress Secretariat either via the registration form or in writing well in advance should you wish for them to make alternative arrangements on your behalf. The Organisers cannot guarantee that requests made onsite at the Congress can be met.


 
Mobile Phones

Analogue mobile phones will not work in Australia as it operates on a digital network. Mobile phones can be hired from telecommunication outlets in the central business district if required.


 
Parking

Parking is available at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre car park. The car park entry is located on Darling Drive, underneath the Exhibition Centre. The car park has direct access to the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre as well as the many entertainment and attractions of Darling Harbour. Opening hours for the car park are:
Monday – Thursday 6am to 1am the following day
Friday Open 24 hours from 6am
Saturday Open 24 hours
Sunday Closes at 1am Monday morning
Day rates for parking are: 0 -1 Hours $8.00
  1 – 2 Hours $14.00
  2 – 3 Hours $20.00
  3 – 4 Hours $24.00
  4 + Hours $27.00
Evening rates for parking are: 0 – 1 Hours $7.00
  1 - 2 Hours $13.00
  2 + Hours $18.00

Entry must be after 5pm and exit must be before 9am the next day for evening rates to apply.

Public Transport

Sydney’s public transport system allows easy travel for delegates between their hotel and the Congress venue or around Sydney’s central business district. Delegates can secure savings on travel throughout the city by purchasing a Day Tripper pass which allows travel on train, bus or ferry from $15.

Darling Harbour is linked with Sydney’s central business district through a regular monorail and light rail service. Services depart every 10 – 15 minutes for the Light Rail and cost $2.90 per trip. Services for the monorail depart every 3 – 5 minutes and cost $4.50 per trip. Taxis can be booked in advance through hotel concierge or hailed from the street.

In registering for this event relevant details may be incorporated into a delegate list for the benefit of all delegates, sponsors, exhibitors, Planning Institute Australia, Conexion Event Management and other parties directly related to the Congress. Should you wish for your details not to be included in this list, please tick the privacy requested box on the registration form.


 
Restaurants

Sydney is one of the most eclectic food capitals in the world. Combining its fresh food produce, creative chefs and multicultural flair, Sydney prides itself on being a world class food destination. King Street Wharf, Cockle Bay Wharf and Darling Harbour are areas within walking distance from the Congress venue that provide an array of cuisines. For dinner with a view, Circular Quay, home to the famous Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House also have an extensive selection of restaurants to cater for all tastes.


 
Security

Delegates must wear their name badges at all times during the Congress. Your name badge will be required for entrance to all Congress Sessions and the Congress exhibition.


 
Shopping

Shops are open from 0900 to 0530 Monday to Friday with late night shopping until 2100 on Thursday evenings. Shops are open from 0900 to 1700 on Saturdays and from 1000 to 1600 on Sundays.

The closest shop to the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre is the Harbourside Shopping Centre at Darling Harbour. Here you will find a range of retail and souvenir outlets as well as services including chemist, currency exchange, Internet Café and Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs).


 
Smoking Policy

The Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre has a no smoking policy. This policy also applies to the majority of restaurants, bars and shopping centres in Sydney.


 

Transfers

The Congress does not provide any transfers from the airport to the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre or the Congress hotels. Each delegate must make their own transport arrangements to the Congress. The following costs are provided as estimates for travel from the airport to Sydney’s central business district.

Communication
  • Use of the website and e-mail to communicate with Congress attendees and presenters
  • Call for papers and review process online to reduce paper submissions
  • Congress program online and attendees encouraged to plan their "agenda" during Congress in advance
  • Online Registration and electronic confirmations/invoices
Print and Other Delegate Materials
  • Minimise number of copies of printed materials
  • Rely on e-marketing as much as possible
  • When printing materials (e.g. name Tags, delegate packs etc), environmentally friendly options will be sourced
  • Eco-friendly Satchels which are durable and can be re-used will be used at the Congress
  • A box will be provided where name badges can be re-cycled
  • Satchel inserts will be kept to a minimum and all companies providing inserts will be encouraged to use recycled paper.

  • Delegates and Speakers are recommended to book with an airline that offers a carbon offset scheme, details of Carbon Offset schemes can found below.
Carbon Offsets

The PIA 2008 Congress is working towards an environmentally sustainable event. The venue will be carbon neutral and delegates have the opportunity to offset carbon emissions created by air travel through a voluntary donation to Carbon Neutralhttp://carbonneutral.com.au
